'[EE]: Mouser overseas shipping trap'

I ran into quite a problem with Mouser on their very "misleading" overseas
shipping charge.
I thought non-US piclisters may benefits from my experience.
When you order from Mouser, you would not know the shipping fee when you
complete the transaction online. You shall be billed when they ship out the
goods -that is the first time, the only time and the last time you know of
their shipping charge.
The biggest problem is on the web site, they give a favorable Fedex
International Prority rate of US$20.00, and USPS of US$30.00. Sounds like
a good deal. NO, you bound to have some items that do not have rate
stated. Don't take it on good faith from Mouser. I got a small power
supply module with rate not stated. Thinking the total rate cannot be too
far off, and likely that the module can be put into an enveleope too if the
packer tried, so I put a note to ask for" most economical shipping method"
. But when I got their invoice, the shipping fee was 4.3 times, US$86.00,
which threw the whole equation off. And there was no way to stop them at
all. At least when I bought from ebayers which have extremely high
shipping, I am aware of their tricks and the total before I checked out.

I was looking for a replacement part for a DVD player the other day.
Found it on Mouser for $US2.50 Great.
Then the estimated shipping cost came up - $US40 for shipping an 8 pin
smt IC to NZ.
No thanks.
Trouble is I can't find it anywhere else - but I can buy a new DVD
player for less than $US42.50!

Mouser sucks big time with their shipping cost. I was put off with their
shipping cost after obtaining their quotation through email.

Well, the Mouser shipping seems works fine here in the USA. They even prompt some of my order from UPS ground to UPS 3-day-delivery service. I paid the group shipping, Mouser pay the rest to get a faster 3 days shipping.
Some of the mouser parts is cheaper than digikey which has wider parts available though.

My guess is that you've been gouged by UPS or FedEx, not Mouser.
True, the rate is high, and mouser should be able to quote you a
specific price - and they should fix their web page to show the actual
shipping cost.
Mouser always passes on the exact UPS or FedEx rate. Which means your
angst should be aimed at UPS or FedEx, both of which seem to be gouging
US customers for international shipping - both inbound and outbound.
Especially since an overseas customer can arrange the *exact same
shipment* for significantly less cost.

Hehe, agreed. I generally stay away from Mouser. While their shipping to
Canada doesn't seem too bad, they ship UPS (well they did last time I
used them, maybe they don't anymore), which has often resulted in
"issues", he biggest being insane "brokerage" charges, which you don't
find out about until a few weeks after you received the items.

Using the US Postal service priority mail with tracking which is
approximately the same cost as other ground service, I get 2nd day
including Saturday or Monday (Fedex home delivery runs Saturday and not
Monday), The other ground services may be up to a week (California to
Ohio). Place an order with Mouser, Jameco or Digikey by noon their time
and likely it will be shipped same day. All 3 mentioned have given me
fine service, but the $25 minimum of Digikey is a turnoff, but I usually
try to hit them with an order when over the minimum.

So, who is your major electric component distributor in Canada?

What was misleading is Mouser put up a page of having special pricing
arrangement with Fedex, but the final pricing can be so far off. And on hind
sight, though USPS could end up cheaper though they were initially price at
$10 more. In any case, most likely there would not be any sale done if the
full shipping fee is made known.
After the transaction, my feeling is the information is deliberately hidden
to mislead or to confuse, as I was led to. And whether Mouser is charging
actually the Fedex or there isn't any rebate, no one knows unless one can go
through their internal account and arrangement.

I'm in the USA, and I find Mouser's shipping costs to be extremely
fair. They frequently upgrade me to 2nd day for free. They also ship
backordered items for free.
Foreign customers are probably getting gouged by UPS/FedEx. Whenever
I've dealt with them shipping overseas, their charges were extremely
high. I've also heard that the recipients are often charged excessive
fees for customs/etc. I've gone to using the good old post office
(Express Mail) for overseas shipments. Much less expensive than
UPS/FedEx. Also fewer customs paperwork hassles for me.

Digikey.ca .... they are amazing in Canada. Order from them before 8pm
central time, I think, and it will be couriered to you the next morning.
I work from home on Wednesdays (Electronics is a hobby), and I put in an
order before dinner on Tuesday, it will be delivered at about 10am on
Wednesday. This is from about 2000km away (half-way across Canada -
Winnipeg to Toronto). Further, for orders > $32 they waive the $8
'handling' fee, and the only shipping charge, regardless of .... hang
on, they've changed their terms...
*> 7. Shipping Charges.* Orders purchased in Canadian currency and
entered by 8:00pm CT will be shipped prepaid for next day delivery via
Purolator to most provinces. A shipping charge of $8.00 (Canadian)* will
be added to the order. Backordered items will be shipped when available
with an additional $8.00 shipping charge per shipment.
> * If unique circumstances require deviation from this charge,
customers will be contacted prior to shipping an order.
*> 8. Handling Charge.* There is no minimum order or handling fee.
The handling fee has been removed, they used to have one for 'small' orders.
I absolutely love their service.... it really is easier than finding a
local brick/mortar venue.
The only issue I have had is their reluctance to ship Lithium batteries
by air ;-)

I normally use Digikey. $8 flat shipping via Purolator, if the order is
over a minimum ($25?). Next day delivery. Excellent service. Prices
for singles high, but above 25 are not too bad.

Rolf basically said everything I wanted to say, so all I'm doing is
"adding my vote": Digikey in Canada rocks. :)

Richard,
what pain would there be for me to order your part and mail it to you
from the US? If it's easy, I would not mind doing that for you. perhaps
you could send the nearest paper denomination bill, which my bank will
change for me. Or would customs and etc make it horrible with 20 forms
and my right arm on deposit in some escrow account?

Al/Richard--
Normally ("most" countries!) small packages sent via USPS from private
person to private person completely bypass customs services unless there is
a high declared value ... especially if mailed in CDROM or other commonly
recognized packaging.
Here in Thailand every courier delivered package has to go through customs
formalities resulting in invoicing and "service" fees of a hundred or so USD
even if the calculated tax is zero. Even worse, it is UPS, FedX or whoever
who clears customs on this end so you can do nothing if it is screwed up and
high taxes are assessed.
Everything I order offshore I stipulate normal air mail postal services
only, and any courier delivery notices are refused without regard:-)
