Please reply OFFLIST if replying.
And only reply if it interests you.

Did the subject immediately make sense?
Does it make sense after some thought?
If so, how long did it take?

Google will tell you what it means if it's still meaningless.
But, ask OFFLIST if you wish.

Yup, I got it immediately. Of course, going along with the subject,
this answer will cost you 75 cents.

I understand the acronym but it doesn't make sense as I'm pretty darn sure
it doesn't exist.

I'll bite, and off-list, as requested. ;-)

While I have no firsthand knowledge of TANSTAAFL, and I suspect many
of those who quote it don't, either, I'm intrigued by the I replacing the AN.

???

Stupid G-mail send button is right by the address field.

Clicked it by mistake while trying to paste in Russell's
address.

That's because eg you run the PICList rather than use it ;-)

As Howard will tell you, using the PICList has many costs, not the least of
which is missed eBay bids.

Presumably this is Russell's periodic "free car wash and sausage"
event, which seems to be some sort of community-building thing
funded by a charitable organization (church?)  The pictures looked
like fun...

I wouldn't expect a member of the population at large to recognize
TANSTAAFL, much less figure out TISATAAFL.

Most people who use TANSTAAFL interpret it a lot more cynically
than it needs to be, I think.  While true literally, the cost to
ME of enjoying someone else's hospitality is close enough to zero
that I ought to be reasonably pleased about it...

Google:

TISATAAFL: 115 hits
TINSTAAFL: 2,060 hits
TINSTAAFL vs  TISATAAFL: 0 hits
The subject of the acronym: 14,600,000 hits (maybe TISATAAFL but it
would be long shot if you found it)

:-) :-)

Only 2,060 because you're spelling it wrong.  Spelled TANSTAAFL
("ain't no" rather than "is no"), a Google search finds 64,200
   hits.

I just saw this 'response' about 2 years and 4 months after I posted
the question.
And, it has no new content.
Maybe the answer was sent by an errant computer program that was out
to lunch.
