Hello,

I bought the PICDEM FS USB board and I want to re-program my PIC18f4550.
So I set up my PICDEM FS USB Board without problem and I could use the demo mode. But as I wanted to use the bootload mode I resetted the board (as necessary) and got the error (device not recognized and not configured any more). ???? I identified the problem as I tried to reinstall the device : the PC said me that the driver was not signed numerically. And "The device can't start (code 10)"
Is it the real problem ? Does it miss a licence for the compatibility with the Windows logo?  Thanks for help.

Even the driver is not digitally signed (by Microsoft), it should
still be able to be installed. A lot of the drivers are not
digitally signed by Microsoft and do not have the Designed for
Microsoft Windows XP logo. Nevertheless they can still be used.

In this case you should not be alarmed by the Microsoft warning
and have to trust Microchip and proceed with the software
installation. By the way, there may be problems as well if you
are not the administrator of the PC.

Xiaofan

Hello,
I imagine well the driver can not be signed by Microsoft. But it changes nothing : it doesn't want to be installed. Thus my problem must be elsewhere. Can it come from the program? Because I've noted that each time I started again the PC the device functioned correctly ... until I resetted the PICDEM board.

Have you installed libusb-win32? I think libusb-win32 has this bug
and I am facing the same problem as you in the computers with
libusb-win32 installed. However I am not the administrator of the
computer and I am not so sure whether this is exactly the reason.
I guess that LIBUSB-WIN32 disabled the Windows notification of
USB device unplug/plug. When you reset the PICDEM, the PIC FS
USB is unplugged and then plugged.

Are you the administrator of the computer?

Xiaofan

At my home computer I also has libusb-win32 installed and I
am now having the same problem as you. I am not so sure if it
is libusb-win32 problem or Microchip Bootloader problem.

Anyway, I just have the fix ready. I have successfully ported
Luddy's USB Linux bootloader for the PICDEM FS USB demo board at
http://internetking.org/fsusb/ to windows. Now I can use a
simple command line tools to load the programs. Initial tests
with the Microchip supplied hex files (CDC, DEMO, HID) shows that
the application is working even though sometimes I get the
verification error message at the first few bytes.

I will post my port to the list.

Xiaofan

Yes, I'm on the session of the administrator of the computer.
But I don't have installed libusb-win32. I don't know what it is and I don't have seen it installed.
Maybe It's an other program which creates the same problem. I'm going to try with an other computer.
Tell me if you have other suggestions or ideas...
I'm looking at my side.
Thanks

I think the problem is not with libusb-win32. I have since
uninstalled libusb-win32 (filter driver) and I still
have problems with the Microchip application. Therefore
I agree with you that there are some problems elsewhere.

In my case I have an alternative solution. I ported the Linux
fsusb application to Windows and it works for me. You can
download the application at Microchip Forum.

Hi,
I am following your instructions and I've made the changes to fsusb-0.1.11
But I don't understand how to use MingW. Which file do I have to download? There are lots of files on the site!
It's maybe easy but I don't know how to build in Win32.
Thanks for help.

Just download the attached zip file in the 2nd post
in the Microchip Forum. The exe file fsusb.exe inside
the zip archive is the one you want to use.
http://forum.microchip.com/tm.asp?m=106426.

You still need to install the filter driver of
libusb-win32.

To build this application, then you need to use
MingW/MSys. Please refer to the readmewin32.txt
inside the zip archive.

By the way, I have since re-flashed the bootloader
(actually the factory pre-loaded hex file) and
un-install the libusb-win32 filter driver. I am
now able to use Microchip application (using
Microchip driver) as well as fsusb (using
libusb-win32 device driver). You may want to
try this as well (to reflash the bootloader using
an ICD2).

Xiaofan
