I was just looking in the section of the Microchip CD Rom concerning
using their BBS. The instructions were incredible chaotic and disorganised.
They provide absolutely no help. Does anyone have a simple way to
log on. I simply want to find some sample code that demonstrates the
SCI module of the 16C74.

There are hundreds of people using the Microchip BBS.  It's quite
simple.
1. Modem to your local Compuserve telephone # (8-N-1)
2. When connected press <Enter>, you'll see some garbage characters.
3. Type "+" (just a plus char, no quotes)
4. When you see the prompt, type MCHIPBBS and press <Enter>

Or you can access much of the same information at
  mchipbbs.microchip.com

The address mchipbbs.microchip.com seems to be no longer valid.
After selecting it I have got this message:
