'audio volume control'

Analog Devices is sure slow in releasing products.  I have a 94' data book
that describes the SSM2161 audio volume control.  I wanted to use this in
my design because I could easily attach a PIC through the 4-bit port A on
the 16C55.  They were supposed to come out with this part two months ago.

I need to find a part to substitute for the SSM2161.  It's basically a 4
channel volume control with a serial interface for transfering the volume
level to the part through a serial port.  The whole control system is
digital, so it would be ideal to keep the volume control digital also.

Does anyone know of a part that I could use to substitute in for this
one...Or better yet, a way to get a hold of pre-release samples of this
part.

Thanks,

Well I have been meaning to start using the LMC1982 Digitally-Controlled
Stereo Tone and Volume Circuit ... (name is too long :-) ) from National
Semiconductor but have never gotten around to it.  It has two channels and
you can select between two different inputs.  It is simple to interface, 3
lines - id, clock and data.  I got the data sheet from their web page (it
was listed a few messages back).  There are others in the series as well
LMC1983 and LMC1992.  They aren't cheap, the LMC1982 lists a $9 at
Digikey.

Have a look at the cell phone semiconductors, they do a lot of similar
type of digital volume controls.

Dont know any numbers at the moment but GEC Plessey and Micronas are
two suppliers that come to mind.

Cheers
